1929 Egypt Photogravure Philae Colonnade Isis Temple - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAVURE EG1 Post-1945 TM4A7B15C35This is an original 1929 photogravure of the colonnade in front of the Temple Isis on Philae. Philae is the name of two islands in the Nile which, until the 1960's, housed important temples and monuments that were completely under water for nine months out of the year. In 1960 UNESCO began a project to relocate these monuments brick by brick to neighboring Agilkia Island to protect them from the rising waters of the river. Photograph by Walther Wolff.
